A painter, mainly in watercolours, Christopher Aubrey was an itinerant artist and an elusive character. He moved from town to town throughout New Zealand from the 1870s to the early 20th century, painting as he went, to earn a living. We know he was in Whanganui in 1894 and 1895 because the Museum has several Aubrey paintings in its small collection of historical Whanganui art, dated with those years. No other record of his time here has been found. Aubrey’s paintings can be found in other New Zealand galleries and museums, from Auckland to Dunedin. More than 50 of his works exist in public and private collections, but very little is known about his life. He seems to have spent much of his time moving from place to place, painting as he went.
