Brief Description |
This steel whale harpoon is gun-propelled. It has a spiked swivel head and the handle is bifurcated into two rods, solid at either end. A piece of twisted, broken wire cable is still attached through the handle.
When the harpoon strikes the body of the whale, the barb of the head turns at right angles and cannot be withdrawn. This harpoon was removed from the body of a whale washed up at Castlecliff Beach in Whanganui in 1927.
