Brief Description This netsuke is carved in ivory and depicts a man who appears to be carrying a tool. The figure may represent a craft or guild or profession. Netsuke, small sculpted toggles, were first created in 17th century Japan. They were used to secure cords, fastened to containers or pouches, to the sash of the kimono, a robe with no pockets.
