Brief Description This katabori, or sculpture netsuke, depicts two figures carved from the same piece of ivory as the large pot and may represent a traditional Japanese story. The netsuke was used as a toggle to secure baskets or bags toclothing. Wearers might store personal belongings, such as pipes and tobacco, money, small documents or seals, and medicines in their containers.
