Gildan was started in 1984 when Glenn and Greg Chammandy aquired a knitting mill in Montreal. Gildan Textiles Inc. was founded to make fabric to supply the family of chindrenswear business Harley Inc. From it’s unpretentious begininnings (the company was named after two of it’s salesmen, Gilbert and Danny) Gildan blossomed under the North American Free Trade Agreement, selling 100% cotton t-shirts to wholesalers, who resold them to U.S and Canadian screenprinters.By 1994 Harley was closed in order to focus on the quickly growing business that had become Gildan Activewear.
