Brief Description |
The Museum's first director, Samuel Henry Drew, probably acquired this mounted Nankeen Night Heron by swapping it for New Zealand bird specimens. This particular bird comes from Australia but it is also found in South East Asia and Melanesia. There is even a small colony near Whanganui. The Nankeen Night Heron is about 60 cm high. It feeds on small fish, reptiles and insects and lives by rivers, lakes and other freshwater outlets.
