Name/Title PAINTING; SS Wanganui
Brief Description This watercolour painting is of SS "Wanganui", a two-masted steamship, under both steam and sail, at sea with a coastline in the background. The image is oval with a wreath of leaves painted in gold as a frame.

This steamship had two masts and two engines of 50 horse power. Built in Scotland, she was purchased by the Wanganui Steam Navigation Co. Ltd. in 1864 and operated out of Wanganui for almost a decade. An ocean-going steamer, the Wanganui had a reputation for speed. “Tenders were recently invited for certain repairs to and a thorough overhaul of the machinery of the SS Wanganui, and we are proud to state that Messrs. Milne and McLeod, engineers of this town, were chosen to perform this work.”. Wanganui Times, 12 June 1866.
