Pencil and wash painting of the "West Entrance to Gorge of the Manawatu - looking East" by John Tiffin Stewart. Foreground shows driftwood and riverbank, with the bush-covered island of Parahake and a gorge cutting in the centre with bush-covered ridges in the background. The title in lead pencil is at lower centre.
This is a preliminary painting for another watercolour painting in this collection reference 1805.83.9. A sketch map in lead pencil of the west entrance to Manawatu Gorge and the confluence of Manawatu and Pohongina Rivers has been drawn on the reverse of the painting.
