Name/Title Placostylus ambagiosus (Flax snail)
Brief Description The pupuharakeke or native flax snail (Placostylus ambagiosus) is found in Northland, and is being driven extinct from predation by rats and pigs. This subspecies is found on Mt Unuwhao, at Spirits Bay. It was collected in February 1946 by A.W.B Powell of the Auckland Museum and colleages; another specimen from the same date and location is in Harvard's Museum of Comparative Zoology, with a note saying in 1946 the snails in the area were "practically exterminated by wild pigs".
