This glass display jar for Whitlock's Chow Chow was specially commissioned by F Whitlock & Sons, a successful food manufacturing company in Wanganui. It was used in the Wellington Industrial Exhibition in 1885.
The Whitlock sauce and pickle factory was started in Whanganui 1877 by Frederick Whitlock. The original ‘factory’ was a large pot in the backyard of the family home. A factory was built in London Street in about 1902.
Whitlocks originally made alcoholic beverages, before expanding into sauce and pickle production starting with Delhi Chutney Sauce. In 1885 the pickles won a certificate at the Wellington Industrial Exhibition and also at the New Zealand Jubilee Exhibition of Arts Science and Industry in 1887. By 1905 the factory was producing chow chow, piccalilli, vinegar, cordials and liquor flavourings.
The factory saw hard times during the Depression and World War II when it had to minimalise production due to a sugar shortage. There were also exciting times such as the introduction of supermarkets and their agents which led to far larger orders than the factory had been used to and Whitlock’s had to upgrade their facilities to cope.
The business was sold to R M Gow in 1985. After a period of several take-overs the business finally ended up in the ownership of Cerebos Gregg Ltd. The factory closed down in 1993 but you can still buy the Whitlock’s brand.

Glass is clear; jar is circular in the centre, 18.2 2 cm diameter, with curved sides and flat front and back; octagional shaped foot at base; rectangular shaped indentations around neck. Lid is cone shaped with lines of ridged glass spiriling to the top. Front of the jar has a red paper label which reads "CHOW CHOW / PURITY & EXCELLENCE GUARANTEED / F. WHITLOCK & SONS / PHOENIX BRAND / WANGANUI, N.Z.".
