One of a collection of black and white photographs of buildings and streets in Whanganui showing St Hill Street viewed from Taupo Quay. The Metropolitan Hotel is in the right foreground and a row of commercial buildings stretch down the street. Several cars are parked at the kerb.
Large buildings reflected the ambitions and the reality of merchant and business requirements in Whanganui. The Metropolitan Hotel and Dalgety’s had prime spots just up from the wharf and the railway station, giving them plenty of street space to load and unload supplies and stock.
