One of a collection of black and white photographs of buildings and streets in Whanganui, this print shows the Loan and Mercantile building in Taupo Quay, taken from the St Hill Street intersection.
The New Zealand Loan & Mercantile Company was a shareholder in the New Zealand Shipping Company. The Loan and Merc building, as it was known locally, dated from the 1890s and was sited conveniently for the company’s shipping business close to the wharves.
