One of a collection of black and white photographs of buildings and streets in Whanganui, this print shows Victoria Avenue from the south west corner of Maria Place. The Quick Lunch Milk Bar is on the corner of street at the far left. A car is in motion on the far right.
“The butcher, the baker, the candlestick maker” and many other small businesses supplied goods and services to main street shoppers in Whanganui. The advent of chain stores in Whanganui came with the Milk Bar building on the corner being replaced with a new Woolworths store in 1941, very soon after this photograph was taken.
