PHOTOGRAPH; Victoria Avenue from the corner of Maria Place
|
Brief Description |
One of a collection of black and white photographs of buildings and streets in Whanganui, this print shows Victoria Avenue from the corner of Maria Place. The National Bank building is in the left foreground and the Durie Hill Tower is visible in the background.
The National Bank of New Zealand on Victoria Avenue, the main street of Whanganui, was built in 1930. Victoria Court is right beside it, and the row of parked cars signals a busy and fairly affluent shopping centre. The worst of the Great Depression was over but economic and social influences from another impending world war will further influence how Whanganui develops.
