Brief Description |
One of a collection of black and white photographs of buildings and streets in Whanganui. This view is of the Whanganui River at Castlecliff, showing industrial and dock areas and train tracks.
Castlecliff was a thriving port, boasting major industries and housing a growing population. The Castlecliff Railway Company was formed in 1882 to provide on-the-spot transportation of people and goods to and from the port. Industry workers, school pupils, shoppers, seaside trippers and commuters were carried in and out of Whanganui until 1932 when passenger services closed.
