Name/Title |
PHOTOGRAPH; Maria Place from Victoria Avenue
|
Brief Description |
One of a collection of black and white photographs of buildings and streets in Whanganui, this print being a view of Maria Place fom Victoria Avenue, looking towards the Sarjeant Art Gallery on Queens Park.
The New Zealand Company planned the layout of the town of Whanganui. The National Bank, the John Coull Auction House and the old 19th century Drill Hall, however, show how buildings were placed according to desire or need, rather than to plan. The Sarjeant Gallery can be seen from Victoria Avenue, providing a bold vista for the town. The couple crossing the street with the pram are untroubled by busy traffic.
