Name/Title |
PHOTOGRAPH; Wanganui Railway Station
|
Brief Description |
One of a collection of black and white photographs of buildings and streets in Whanganui, this print being a view of the Wanganui Railway Station on Taupo Quay with tram tracks, pedestrians and parked cars in the foreground.
The gracious Wanganui Railway Station, designed by George Troup and built in 1901, linked with a national railway service that had been available to parts of Whanganui since 1878. A local line was linked from Taupo Quay to Castlecliff by the privately owned Castlecliff Train Company which closed in 1932 after a tramway to the seaside suburb was installed, made rail uneconomic.
