One of a collection of black and white photographs of buildings and streets in Whanganui, this print is of the Court House building in Moutua Gardens.
In 1871 the second Wanganui Court House was built on a site earmarked for the purpose since 1842 by the New Zealand Company. The site was Moutoa Gardens, once called Market Place, and a traditional area used for trading and temporary accommodation for Māori traders from the upper and middle Whanganui River.
