PHOTOGRAPH; Garrison Band Rotunda, Queens Park
|
Brief Description |
One of a collection of black and white photographs of buildings and streets in Whanganui, this print is a view of the Wanganui Garrison Band Rotunda in Queens Park.
The rotunda was built by band members in 1901 on the site in Queens Park where the cenotaph now stands. It was shifted to this spot in 1935. There is a tradition of brass bands in Wanganui, dating back to the late 1840s with the arrival of British soldiers to the newly established garrison town of Whanganui.
