The Drill Hall opened in 1879 to provide both the Imperial Army and the volunteer militia with headquarters. The Drill Hall and the Veterans’ Steps, built in 1919, are a direct link to Wanganui’s military connections.
The upper part of Maria Place is now Majestic Square and Mint Cafe is now on the site of the Drill Hall. The National Bank building, visible on the right, is now the ANZ Bank.
