One of a collection of black and white photographs of buildings and streets in Whanganui, this print is a view of Market Place from Taupo Quay. The Federal Hotel is in the foreground and Public Trust Office to the right where government and commerce sit easily alongside suburbia.
The Federal Hotel was used by farmers and their families when they made their regular business and buying trips to town. It also served riverboat passengers being located opposite Hatrick’s Wharf. The association of Whanganui with the rural sector has always produced economic and social benefit to the town.
