PHOTOGRAPH; Market Square from Campbell Street
|
Brief Description |
One of a collection of black and white photographs of buildings and streets in Whanganui, this print is of Market Square from Campbell Street, now part of Ridgway Street.
Durie Hill is a backdrop to the Public Trust and Federal Hotel. The Town Bridge, built in 1871, provided easy access to the town from the east side of the river.
The Durie Hill Garden Suburb was designed by Architect Samuel Hurst Seager in 1919. Facilities, such as the Durie Hill Elevator which had opened in 1919, were constructed to encourage people to build there.
