PHOTOGRAPH; Ridgway Street from Drews Avenue
|
Brief Description |
One of a collection of black and white photographs of buildings and streets in Whanganui, this print is a view of Ridgway Street from Drews Avenue, formerly Wicksteed Place.
A long run of commercial buildings on the east side of the street shows that business opportunities in Whanganui were plentiful, despite the ravages of the Great Depression of the 1930s.
Some of these premises had flats on the upper floor where owners or their employees lived. “Living above the shop” meant that there was someone always available for security and for rush jobs. It also meant that people never entirely got away from work.
