The Royal Irish Regiment was a British Army infantry regiment first raised in 1684 with a home depot in Clonmel, County Waterford, in Ireland. Initially known as the 18th Regiment of Foot, they became known as the Royal Irish Regiment in 1695 after their performance at Namur under the leadership of King William III. The line infantry consisted of five regular battalions, three Militia and Special Reserve battalions and six hostilities-only battalions. Their motto was "Virtutis Namurcensis Praemium, or "Reward for Valour at Namur". The regiment was disbanded in 1922.
