Bernet Krumin, also known as Russian Jack and Barney the Swagger, was born in Latvia on 26 March 1878. He came to New Zealand in the "Star of Canada" which was wrecked at Gisborne on 3 June 1912. He spent 50 years walking around the lower North Island of New Zealand as a swagman, carrying his possessions in a bag and moving from farm to farm to find short-term work before taking to the road again. He passed away on 19 September 1968.
