Barkcloth (tapa) made from inner bark paper mulberry tree (Broussonetia papyrifera); siapo tasina or siapo elei, Samoan barkcloth patterned from a design tablet, emphasised with freehand overpainting with a heavy black and brown resinous glaze of o'a sap mixed with charcoal from lama nut kernels. Main pattern of 9 squares with central fa'a aveau (starfish) motif. Border at one side, same pattern repeated between 2 strips of 3 squares of starfish patterns. Different pattern between quadrants, shamrock or frangipan motif and circles also used, brown and black dye.
