This tooled leather satchel, or attaché case, belonged to the Honorable John Ballance, Member of the House of Representatives and later, Premier ( Prime Minister) of New Zealand. The words "J Ballance Taylors Road" are marked in ink on the back of the satchel.
This satchel was designed to carry papers, note paper, envelopes and pens. A sturdy leather strap is stitched to its top as a handle. A brass lock and two buckles close the front flap. The satchel folds out to reveal two pockets and pen holders.
