Name/Title	Carcharodon megalodon (Megalodon shark); fossil tooth
Brief Description	This fossil shark tooth, found about 80 kilometres inland from the Whanganui River mouth at Pīpīriki, is triangular with serrated edges and emerges from a sandstone base. It belonged to the largest known shark, Carcharodon megalodon, which lived from 16 to 2.5 million years ago. C. megalodon was related to the great white shark of today, but was up to 20 m long. This specimen is from sandstone about 4-5 million years old, and may have been collected by Samuel Drew, the Museum's founder.
