Brief Description |
This ngatu tahina or barkcloth (tapa) is from Tonga and is made from the inner bark of the paper mulberry tree (Broussonetia papyrifera). Ngatu tahina is decorated by use of a pattern board using brown dye. Dark brown and black over-painting highlights the patterns.
This ngatu tahina has a plain border at each end with eighteen panels running the length of cloth. It shows alternating pattern board designs of plain panels, amoamokofe leaves and curved line patterns. Two dark brown circles are painted on every third strip.
