| Brief Description |
This complex letter, while addressed to Rev R Taylor, was actually written to his wife (Mary) Caroline Taylor on 25 November 1837. It is from her sister Charlotte in Huntington, England, who wrote her family news on both sides of a large sheet of paper. The paper was folded into four, making eight pages altogether, with cross-hatched writing on every part of every page with more news, except that reserved for the address. The letter is very hard to decipher and made harder by the wear and tear and pieces missing along the fold-lines, but a transcription has been made, preserving the original punctuation and grammar, and is available at the Museum. "My very dear Sister you will readily imagine the joy and pleasure your long expected letters assuring us of your safety and the birth of your dear little nameless boy diffused through [illegible] the letters arrived on our dear Mother’s birthday... ". Mary Caroline Taylor, née Fox, was born in Huntingdon, England, on 7 April 1803. She married the Reverend Richard Taylor and was his life’s companion, accompanying him to Australia and then New Zealand where he was an Anglican missionary. She died on 22 June 1884 and is buried in the Wanganui Cemetery.
