Brief Description This Common Porcupine (Erethizon dorsatum) has been stuffed and mounted. He has variegated brown quills, all present, and glass eyes have been inserted. He is mounted on a wooden base.
This porcupine is from North America but they are also indigenous to South America, South Asia and Africa. Their mass of quills protects them from predators.

Porcupine quills were a popular ornament and a good-luck charm in many parts of the world. The hollow rattle quills were used as musical instruments and as containers for gold dust.
