Brief Description |
Watercolour titled "War Workers at Wharenui" by Charles Hay Campbell, Collegiate School, Wanganui. This information is written in brown ink on a white paper label stuck to the back of the backing board. A note in pencil reads "Sold £4.4s".
The painting is of seven women in a living room, all sewing or knitting except for one who is pouring tea. The style of dress is for the period of World War I.
This painting was found as a backing mount for a framed sampler in the collection (REF: 1802.659). When the sampler was deframed in September 2000, this painting was discovered.
Ian Hay-Campbell, grandson of Charles Hay-Campbell said, "Wharenui was a boarding house on the corner of Ingestre and Campbell Streets. Charles Hay-Campbell came out to New Zealand in 1915 or 1916 and he and his family boarded at Wharenui. The painting may therefore include members of the Hay-Campbell family at work in the latter part of World War I.
