This photographic compilation of four individual photos of aviators above an image of the Southern Cross plane commemorates the first ever trans-Tasman flight from Richmond Aerodrome in Sydney, Australia, to Wigram Aerodrome in Christchurch, New Zealand in September 1928. Two men wear aviator's costumes and two wear military uniform. They are identified as (l-r): H A Litchfield, C T P Ulm, C Kingsford Smith, T H McWilliams.
The Southern Cross was a Fokker tri-motor monoplane. It covered 2,670 kilometres in 14 hours and 25 minutes. The Southern Cross was flown by Sir Charles Kingsford Smith and his crew: Charles Thomas Philippe Ulm, co-pilot; Thomas H McWilliams, radio operator; and Harold Arthur Litchfield, navigator.
