Brief Description Black and white photograph of Brigadier General A C Stewart, CMG, DSV, unveiling a memorial seat, commemorating the services of the New Zealand Rifle Brigade 1915-1918 on 22 February 1938, in Whanganui. The Brigadier General stands on a podium speaking, with the Reverend Archdeacon Young seated next to him, four men seated on folding chairs to the right, and a crowd of people gathered behind and in the foreground. The seat is on the left with a plaque on the back and an inlaid triangular decoration on the arm. Cars and houses are visible in the background.

The memorial seat is located at the corner of Great North Road and Virginia Road in Whanganui. It is made of shellrock with an inlaid tablet and was built by Mr Dix, a Waitotara County Engineer, and his men. The idea for the memorial seat came from Mr Henry Keesing and at the time it was built, was the only memorial to the Rifle Brigade in New Zealand. It was unveiled by Brigadier General A C Stewart who commanded the 2nd Battalion of the Brigade.
