Black and white photograph taken at the laying of the foundation stone of the Whanganui War Memorial Hall. The image shows four men standing by the stone being lowered into position. One holds a trowel and another holds a mallet. A crowd of adults and children watch.
The foundation stone was laid by Governor General Viscount Cobham, who was is accompanied by the mayor of Whanganui at the time, Edward Alan Millward (1953-1962), and and two unidentified men.
Sir Charles John Lyttleton Viscount Cobham was the ninth Governer General of New Zealand, serving 1957-1962.
The Whanganui War Memorial Hall opened on 25 April 1960. It was built as a civic hall in memory of those who fought in World War II 1939-1945.
