Name/Title PHOTOGRAPH; Opening of the New Isolation Block Whanganui Hospital
Brief Description Black and white photograph taken at the opening of the new Isolation Block at Whanganui Hospital (Newcombe Ward). The image shows the speaker, Mr W E Broderick, standing behind a desk in front of the building, with dignitaries and honoured guests seated on either side of him and a crowd of people gathered around watching. The building behind has full length glass windows and a corrugated iron roof.

The Whanganui Hospital Board received a recommendation in December 1916 that it should build an 'isolation block' to cater to the health and needs of tuberculosis and diptheria patients. There were difficulties in raising funds and in August 1937, 21 years later, the Department of Health deemed the need for the block so urgent it advised the Whanganui Hospital Board to work on overdraft until a loan could be raised. Immediate calls for tender were issued and the Whanganui building company, Walpole & Paterson, was the successful tenderer. The brand new building was opened on Thursday 18 August 1938 by the Chairman of the Whanganui Hospital Board Mr W E Broderick.
