This sepia-toned photograph, mounted on fine card, is of Edith Palmer Taylor, wife of the Reverend Basil Taylor, son of the Reverend Richard and Mrs Mary Caroline Taylor. It is a head and shoulders portrait of a woman with her hair piled up under a small cap, wearing a high-collared gown with a large bow and button feature at the collar.
Edith Palmer Tylee was from Bath in England and migrated with her family to New Zealand; her shipboard diary is held in the Archives at Whanganui Regional Museum. She married Reverend Basil Kirk Taylor, son of Reverend Richard Taylor, at St Stephens Chapel in Auckland on 3 December 1863 and they went on to have six children: Mary Edith Laura: born in 1864, married Alexander Peebles Webster in 1885 Bertha Cecilia: born in 1866, died in 1946, unmarried Herbert Richard Stovin: born in 1868, married Alice Rose Cecilia Bagge at Marton in 1899 Ethelred Rosa Annie: born in 1870, a masseuse, died unmarried Arthur John Spencer: born in 1874, died in 1875 Basil Maples: born in 1876, married Bertha Charlotte Amelia Wall at Porirua in 1904
Edith passed away at her home "Cossington" in Campbell Street, Whanganui, on 25 October 1914.
