Brief Description This black and white photograph is of the Reverend Basil Maple Taylor, his wife Bertha Charlotte Taylor, and their three daughters Gabrielle, Bertha and Nancy. They are sitting outside in the garden having tea underneath a large cherry tree in blossom.

From left to right: Basil seated on a chair, Bertha seated at a table set with tea cups and teapot, Bertha Charlotte seated opposite Bertha junior, Gabrielle seated on the ground Nancy standing behind her mother with a hand resting on the back of the chair.

Basil Maples Taylor was born on 7 September 1876 in Pūtiki, Whanganui, the son of Edith Palmer and the Reverend Basil Kirk Taylor. He attended Wanganui Collegiate and Christ's College, and from age 15 until his marriage he worked as assistant to Reverend A O Williams and as a choirmaster and organist. Basil married Bertha Charlotte Amelia Wall in Porirua on 6 January 1904.

Basil was a school teacher and lay preacher until 1927 when he was ordained as a clergyman in the Church of England. He was appointed vicar of the parish of Suburban North and took up residence at Wakapuaka near Nelson, later moving to the Hinds parish in Canterbury. In 1936 Basil developed shingles and retired to Christchurch, where he passed away on 20 June 1953.
