Brief Description This black and white photograph is copied from an original photograph and is of Mrs Mary Caroline Taylor, nee Fox, the wife of the Reverend Richard Taylor, a Church of England missionary and priest who lived and worked in the Whanganui region for 30 years. The image is of an elderly woman seated in a chair, wearing a black dress and a white lace cap, with one hand resting on a walking stick.

Mary Caroline Fox was from Huntingdon, England, and was born on 7 April 1803. She married Richard Taylor on 15 July 1829 and they had three sons and three daughters. The Reverend Taylor was appointed as a missionary by the Church Missionary Society in 1835 and his family sailed to the Antipodes. They spent three years in New South Wales, Australia, and voyaged to New Zealand in 1839. They arrived at Pūtiki Wharanui in Whanganui on 1 May 1843. Caroline (as she was known) died on 22 June 1884 and is buried at the Whanganui Cemetery in Heads Road.
