Brief Description This colour photograph is of the gravestone of the Reverend Basil Kirke Taylor. The image shows the marble gravestone with a tarnished metal fence around the plot, and a white church in the background. The epitaph reads "Sacred to the Memory of The Rev Basil Kirke Taylor M.A. Many years Missionary at Putiki Wanganui. Who ceased from his labours 3rd Nov 1876. Aged 45 years. Thy will be done".

Basil Kirke Taylor was born on 11 September 1831 in Coveney Rectory, Isle of Ely, to his parents the Reverend Richard and Mary Caroline Taylor. With his family, he arrived in New Zealand from Australia aboard the "Nimrod" in 1839, where his father eventually took up the Anglican missionary role in Whanganui in 1843.

Basil married Edith Palmer Tylee of Bath, England, in St Stephens Chapel in Auckland on 3December 1863. Together they had six children:

Basil Maples born in 1876

Basil Kirke Taylor died on 3 November 1876 in Auckland, aged 45, after a debilitating illness.
