This sepia-toned photograph of the Wanganui Rifle Volunteers was taken on 24 May 1880 by photographer Frank Rufus Huff. The image shows two rows of uniformed men with rifles, arranged in two rows with the front row kneeling with weapons aimed and with the back row standing.
The photograph was taken at Cooks Gardens on the west bank of the Whanganui River. The Red Lion Hotel, on the east bank, can be seen at the base of Durie Hill.
