PHOTOGRAPH; Fox News Movietone filming in Whanganui
|
Brief Description |
This black and white photograph is of the Fox News Movietone camera filming at the Wanganui River Carnival on 22 January 1930. The image show a van with the Fox News Movietone logo on the side, with a large moving film camera on the roof with a cameraman, facing the photographer. The van driver, wearing headphones, sits in the driver's seat with the door open, facing out of the vehicle. A crowd of people are gathered to the right and left of the van with hills on background.
This camera was in New Zealand for around three months and stopped in Wanganui at the time of the River Carnival on 22 January 1930. The van was set up on the riverbank and filmed a Maori poi dance and haka being performed on a punt on the river. The sound was captured by a microphone that was secured to the punt and attached to the camera with a long cable strung over the heads of the crowd. This was a unique camera, being a 'talkie' capable of capturing and replaying sound as well as moving images.
