Brief Description Black and white photograph of the Messrs A D Willis Staff Picnic. The image shows a bush scene with a fallen log over a shallow stream, a man on the right with his trousers rolled up standing in the water and several women posed on either side of the stream bank. On the left, a man in a waistcoat and hat looks at the camera.

Archibald Dudingston Willis was born in London in 1842 and came to New Zealand after his mother's death in 1857. He had some printing experience in London and followed this line of work in New Zealand working on the Hawke's Bay Herald, the New Zealand Advertiser, the Otago Daily Times, the Christchurch Press and the Wanganui Chronicle. While in Wanganui Willis also bought a small bookseller and stationers and expanded it into a successful and reputable wholesale stationers, booksellers and lithographists, well known throughout the Dominion.
