This 1799 English copper halfpenny dates from the reign of King George III. The obverse shows a right-facing bust of the king, with the inscription "GEORGIVS III DEI GRATIA REX" while the reverse shows a left-facing seated Britannia, holding a spray and spear, with the inscription "BRITANNIA 1799".
Made in the Soho Mint the word "SOHO" is just visible below Britannia's shield. The Soho Mint was created by Matthew Boulton in 1788 in Handsworth, West Midlands, England. The mint contained eight machines, driven by steam engine, each capable of striking 70 to 84 coins per minute.
