Brief Description |
This copper Irish farthing, worth a quarter of a penny, was struck by the Soho Mint in 1806, during the reign of King George III. The obverse has a bust of King George III facing right and "GEORGIUS III D.G. REX" inscribed around the rim. An Irish harp and "HIBERNIA / 1806" feature on the reverse. The coin has an engrailed edge, which is a grove cut into the edge running around the coin, with oblique milling within the engrailing.
In 1805 and 1806 the Royal Mint authorised Mathew Boulton of the Soho Mint to strike an issue of copper pennies, half pennies and farthings for issue in Ireland.
