Brief Description This small black and white carte de visite photograph is of Mr George Charles Aiken, the younger. The image shows a man seated against a plain studio backdrop wearing a large woollen coat over a waistcoat and shirt with a fob chain on his left side. He has slicked-down hair and a bushy beard, and holds his hands loosely in his lap.

George Charles Aiken was born in 1863, son of George Charles Aiken who arrived in New Zealand in 1857. A farmer in Waverley, he married Louisa Hannah Spicer in 1885 and died 1941. He and Hannah had 11 children:

Owen John, born in 1889, married Winifred Emma Monk, killed in 1923
Ethel May, born in 1890, married George Riddell Holmes, died in 1964
Thomas Harold, born in 1892, married Frances Turner, died in 1972
Olive Lillian, born in 1894, married Frederick Herman Hayes of Greymouth, died in 1975
Ellen Louisa, born in 1896, died in 1897 aged seven months
Florence Louisa, born in 1899, died in 1900 aged eight months
Henry George, born in 1899, married Muriel Pussell, died in 1976
Albert Edward, born in 1900, married Violet Hoard and lived in Stratford, died in 1994
Ellen Alice, born in 1905, married Valentine Thomas Whiley, died in 1999
Humphries Wilson, born in 1907, married Lydia E Brown, died in 1994
