Name/Title PHOTOGRAPH; Reverend Basil Maples Taylor
Brief Description This black and white photograph is of the Reverend Basil Maples Taylor, the son of Reverend Basil Kirke Taylor and grandson of Reverend Richard Taylor. This studio portrait of a white-haired man wearing glasses seated. He is dressed in the clothing of an Anglican priest and is holding a Bible. The photograph is attached to a card. An inscription on the lower right corner of the card reads "With every good wish and in remembrance of happy fellowship".

Basil Maples Taylor was born on 7 September 1876 in Pūtiki, Whanganui, the son of Edith, nee Palmer, and Basil Kirke Taylor. He attended Wanganui Collegiate School and Christs College in Christchurch, and from age 15 until his marriage he worked as an assistant to the Reverend A O Williams and as choirmaster and organist.

He married Bertha Charlotte Amelia Wall in Porirua on 6 January 1904. He was firstly a school teacher and lay preacher and in 1927 was ordained as a clergyman in the Church of England. He was appointed vicar of the Parish of Suburban North and took up residence at Wakapuaka near Nelson, later moving to Hinds parish in Canterbury.

In 1936 he developed shingles and retired to Christchurch, where he passed away on 20 June 1953.
