This black and white photograph is of a young woman identified as "Miss Taylor", one of the daughters of Reverend Richard Taylor and his wife Mary Caroline Taylor, nee Fox. The studio portrait shows a young dark-haired woman in a long light-coloured dress, holding a hat in her left hand and with her right hand resting on a table.
Richard Taylor was a Missionary with the Christian Missionary Society, ordained as a priest on 8 November 1829. Taylor married Mary Caroline Fox on 15 July 1829 and they went on to have three sons and three daughters. The Taylor Family migrated to New Zealand via Australia and arrived in 1839.
The daughters (one of whom is pictured here) are: Laura: born in England, married Thomas Henry Harper on 27 October 1859 Mary Catherine: born in England, married Lieutenant Spencer M Medley in December 1863 and settled in England. Bertha Charlotte: born 4 February 1842 in Waimate, unmarried, died in Whanganui in 1878.
