Edward Thomas Broughton was born in England and arrived in New Zealand at Lyttleton with his parents aboard the 'William Hyde' in 1852-1853. They arrived in Whanganui shortly afterward when Edward worked as an auctioneer, commercial agent, and accountant, residing in Wilson Street. During his time in Whanganu Edward was a member of the Land & Buiding Society, a Borough Auditor, and a Trustee of Churton College.
Edward married Emeline Denne in 1888 and they had one child, Edward Hugh Leslie born 1889.
Edward Thomas Broughton died on 5th April 1893 aged 59 years.
