Brief Description Small sepai toned photograph of Mr Charles William Broughton. Portrait of a man wearing a pale jacket with top button only done-up over a pale waistcoat and high-collared chirt. Man has a handle-bar moustache and slicked back hair. Edges of image are deliberately faded to show only a head and shoulders portrait.
Charles William Broughton, son of James, arrived at Lyttleton aboard the 'William Hyde'in 1852. He made his way to Whanganui where he settled as a commercial agent and a farmer. He later became an interpreter with the Imperial Forces and was murdered by Maori at Kakaramea on the Patea River in 1865 during the Maori Wars.
Although not formally recorded, Charles and his wife had the following children: John born 1859, William born 1861, Katherine born 1863, Charles born 1865, and Rachel Emily born (after her father's death )1866.
